Her research interests are obesity, specifically in children, program development to prevent overweight/obesity in children from continuing into adulthood, and motivational interviewing. Ms. Ryder volunteered with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's Camp Strong4Life, a camp for obese adolescents and their parents to promote healthy eating and physical activity behaviors within the family. She also conducted a research project with investigators at the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta titled, "What is preventing physicians from providing weight-related counseling? Perspectives from Georgia Health Providers," which she presented at the Georgia Public Health Association Meeting in March 2014. View the poster.
As part of her integrated field placement beginning this summer, Ms. Ryder will be working two other students at Athens Regional Health System to develop and pilot-test a curriculum for a camp for overweight adolescents to promote healthy behaviors (similar to the work she completed at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta). Her MPH capstone will focus on conducting the process and outcome evaluation for the camp to identify gaps and areas for improvement for future camps, as well as in identifying future funding opportunities. Ms. Ryder will also obtain experience in clinical social work practice at Athens Regional Health System.
Ms. Ryder's future career plans are to work in a medical setting establishing a program focused on obesity prevention in the community.
