We recently received an update from Ciera Schoonover (Pauley), MSW, MPH (Dec
’13). Ms. Schoonover accepted a spot in the PhD Clinical Psychology Program at
Central Michigan University beginning Fall 2014. Ms. Schoonover will
be working with a professor who disseminates Parent Child Interaction
Therapy locally, nationally, and internationally.
Of the interview process, she notes, "They gave
me a lot of feedback about how much they loved the dual degree. I
definitely attribute my acceptance to the program to the dual degree!
I'm very excited to see where this takes me, and to utilize my social
work and public health skills along the way."

MSW MPH Spring 2014 graduates present capstone projects at the College of Public Health Poster Day

Katherine Binkow (May ’14)
presented her poster titled ”Hospice and Palliative Care: What are the Preferred Communication Channels
for Older Adults Seeking Information About End-of-Life Decision Making?” and Leah Klein (May ’14) presented her
poster titled “An Intervention Mapping Project for Rape Crisis and Sexual
Assault Services” at the College of Public Health Poster Day. The Poster Day is a required component of
their MPH coursework and presents their MPH capstone projects.

Both Ms. Binkow and Ms. Klein will be graduating this May. Both are utilizing a combination of their social
work and public health skills in their employment settings; Ms. Binkow is
employed as a Social Worker at Calvin
Court, Presbyterian Homes of
Georgia, where she recently completed an integrated social work and public
health field placement. Ms. Klein is
employed as the Volunteer Coordinator at the Rape
Crisis Center in August, Georgia.

Meet Our Students - Hannah Demmitt, BS (Dec '14)
Hannah Demmitt, BS
is pursuing an MSW MPH with expected graduation in December 2014. Ms. Demmitt earned a BS in Psychology from
the University of Georgia in 2011.
Ms. Demmitt’s interest areas are in physical activity, child
development, and international work
and travel.
She will begin her integrated field placement at The Tree House, an organization
working to strengthen communities by reducing the occurrence and impact of
child abuse through counseling, educating, supporting and nurturing children
and families. There, she will utilize
public health skills to launch a community social marketing campaign against
child abuse and assist in the implementation of a new community-based
program. She will use social work skills
by assisting with forensic interviews and providing individual counseling to
children using trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy.
Currently, she is employed as a Psychosocial
Rehabilitation Individual at Advantage
Behavioral Health Systems where she provides in-home skills training, case
management and crisis management to individuals with mental health
diagnoses. Skills training includes
coping skills for anxiety and depression, medication management, budgeting, and
linking to community resources. Ms.
Demmitt also volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate in Georgia for 3
years, where she advocated for children who were placed in foster care to
ensure their needs were at the forefront of all court proceedings. Crucial components of this work included
conducting interviews, writing reports, and participating in court hearings. Additionally, she has experience living
abroad and has completed numerous short-term international projects, such as
working in a children’s home and a nutritional clinic for malnourished infants.
Ms. Demmitt’s career goals are to combine her compassion for
children with her skills in public health by focusing her efforts on issues
related to maternal and child health, either nationally or
internationally. Her interests include
working to provide children access to basic needs such as clean water,
vaccination, and a safe environment. Ms.
Demmitt’s passion for justice and equality is what keeps her focused and driven
to achieve her lofty goals.

Meet Our MSW MPH Coordinator - Trina Salm Ward, PhD, MSW
Trina Salm Ward, PhD,
MSW, began coordinating the MSW MPH Program in Spring 2014. Dr. Salm Ward is an Assistant Professor
jointly appointed in the School of
Social Work and the Department
of Health Promotion and Behavior in the College of Public Health at the
University of Georgia. As Coordinator of
the program, she works through each school to ensure an integrated program of
study, advises students, serves as field liaison for their integrated field
placements. She is also leading an
ongoing evaluation process of the program.
Dr. Salm Ward earned an Interdisciplinary PhD in Health Sciences and a
Master of Social Work from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a BA in
Psychology from St. Norbert College. She
comes to UGA with 14 years’ experience conducting clinical and population-level
research in academic and health care settings, and 2 years’ experience as a
practicing family therapist.
“I am just thrilled to be here,” says Dr. Salm Ward, “the dual degree
students are amazing – they have a solid understanding of individual-level and
population-level determinants of social and health issues. This broad perspective is so necessary,
especially when working to address the persistent health disparities facing our
world today. Our students leave this
program well-versed in both public health and social work approaches, and they
can apply those skills in a multitude of settings, including leadership
positions, direct practice, and research.
The field of Public Health Social Work is continuing to advance, and
along with it, interest in MSW MPH Programs.”

MSW MPH students support National Public Health Week

Two MSW MPH students participated in the National Public Health Week
celebration at the University of Georgia.
Kelly Ryder (Dec ’14) and Joelle
Pettus (Dec ’14) shared their message
about prevention with tips on how students can increase their physical activity
each day on campus. They held an event “Walk to Class for Better Health”
to share how the transportation choices one makes every day can impact
long-term health.
The University of Georgia College
of Public Health celebrated National Public Health Week (NPHW) by
hosting events and activities during the week of April 7th surrounding this
year’s theme, "Public Health: Start Here."
National Public Health Week is sponsored by the American Public Health Association. Since
1995, the group declared the first week in April as “a time to recognize the
contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to
improving our nation’s health.” More
