Joelle Pettus authors a book review published in the Social Work and Public Health Journal

Joelle Pettus (Dec '14) published a book review in the June issue of the Social Work and Public Health Journal.  She reviews the book, Ten Lessons in Public Health:  Inspiration for Tomorrow's Leaders, written by Alfred Sommer and published in 2013.  In her review, she concludes, "Ten Lessons in Public Health is a hard-to-put-down timely must read:  a vivid look into the life of an accomplished epidemiologist filled with important career and life advice to teach, motivate, and inspire all public health practitioners."

Ms. Pettus wrote the review as part of a course requirement in a professional writing course (MNPO 7010) taught by Dr. Michael Holosko.  "I wrote this review last summer, and I was able to bring in the best of both the social work and public health fields, relying heavily on the writing skills I developed from Dr. Holosko's course."

Previously she participated in the Global Civic Engagement project in South Africa and Swaziland.

After completing her graduate degrees, Mrs. Cruz hopes for the opportunity to work on research that would bring light to issues in the realm of social/health inequalities and abuse, with a specific focus on minorities and underserved communities. Mrs. Cruz’s hope is to one day work with an organization such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization or Unicef so that she can bring a voice to the many abused and oppressed individuals who oftentimes are not included in research because they don’t have the opportunity to share their experiences either because they’re not allowed to or are simply hard to reach. As a result, she would like to be part of the implementation of strategies and programs that will allow communities around the world, to have equal access to recourses and opportunities.
